7 DIY Tips to Improve Your Kitchen

The kitchen is the heart of the home, and for many people, it is the most used room in the house. And yet, if you ask home owners if they are happy with the state of their kitchen, a large portion will answer in the negative.

Why exactly? The list goes on and on. The space is too small or too outdated, there isn’t enough cabinet space and the wall paper is peeling. But for many homeowners, a complete kitchen makeover is little more than a dream, simply because kitchen remodels are often time consuming, and above all, expensive.

Luckily, there are many do- it-yourself projects that you can tackle to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing kitchen space that won’t cost you and arm and a leg to achieve.

1) Vamp up your cabinets

One of the most common complaints when it comes to kitchens, are old and tired cabinets. But due to cost and time, they are often the last thing that gets changed.

Fortunately, there are ways to spruce up you cabinets without replacing them all together.

Try a little paint. Choose a color and nominate a weekend to paint your cabinets. Yes it may be a little time consuming, but it won’t cost you much and it will immediately breathe new life into your kitchen.

And if painting doesn’t appeal to you, custom doors and drawer fronts can be added to the existing boxes to provide your kitchen with a more modern look at a fraction of the cost.

2) Install a backsplash

The right backsplash can add color and flare to a bland kitchen, and installing one can be both affordable and relatively easy to do on your own.

Try a stainless steel backsplash or stacked stone panels for an up-scale look without the up-scale cost or purchase a peel and stick mosaic tile kit for an easy DIY project that will come with everything including tiles and pre-mixed grout.

3) Brighten the room with paint

A little paint can go a long way and can turn a drab kitchen into a bright and cheery space that you’ll never want to leave. Bold accent walls are currently popular, and opt for drastic colors like Tiffany blue, apple green, orange or teal to keep your space fresh and modern.

4) Switch up your counter

If you have dreamt of granite counter tops, but had nightmares about the cost and labor, consider installing granite tiles instead. The cost is significantly lower and they are easy to install yourself.

Another option is installing wooden countertops that will provide your kitchen with a welcoming and rustic feel.

5) Hang your pots

If you don’t have much cupboard space, try suspending a rack from the ceiling to hang your pots and pans from. This will add visual interest to your room and also rid you of some unwanted clutter.

6) Opt for new knobs

Simply changing your cabinet hardware can work wonders for your kitchen and can make a bold statement in the process. Look for modern knobs or handles to accent your cabinets and if you choose knobs that are the same size as your past knobs, you won’t even have to re-drill.

7) Have fun with decoration

Your home should say something about you, so don’t be afraid to add personal touches to your kitchen space. Artwork, chalkboards, fruit bowls, light fixtures and coffee makers can all be added to liven up your space, so have fun with decorating and never be afraid to try new things.

At the end of the day, you can perform a DIY kitchen makeover for much less than you think. All you need is a vision, a little elbow grease, and some allotted time to execute. So choose your projects and start making your vision, a reality.
