Other Things to Consider When Tiling Your Bathroom

Choosing new tiles for your bathroom or kitchen is a big decision. With endless choices between shape, style and colour, finding the perfect tiles for your room can be like finding a needle in a haystack. But, it isn’t just the tiles you need to worry about.

Without the correct adhesive and grout, even the best tiles can look shabby and out of place.

Here is a quick guide to making sure you get the right materials to help your tiles shine:

Choose the right adhesive

The adhesive bonds the bottom of the tile to the wall. There are different types of adhesive available which are suitable for different types of tile. Some are easier to use, making it easier for people to fit tiles themselves, saving the cost of hiring a professional. The types available are:

• Organic mastic – this comes pre mixed and stops tiles from sliding around when fitted. Care should be taken though, as they are not resistant to heat or for use outdoors
• Thin set mortar – this requires mixing but offers better bonding. Thin set mortars come in different varieties and are suitable for most jobs
• Latex mortar – offering even better adhesive qualities, latex mortar is also moisture resistant.

Choosing the right adhesive will ensure your tiles are properly bonded to the wall, and more importantly, that they stay bonded. Ask at your local hardware store to ensure you get the correct product for your job.

Choose the right grout

Grout is the material used to fill the gaps between tiles. Grout adds a lot to the aesthetic value of your tiles and, if done incorrectly, can ruin the finished look of your tiles.
Grout is cement based and comes in two main varieties: sanded and unsanded.
Sanded grout is the most common type, which is as hard as concrete when it is fully set. However it is very water absorbent if proper sealant is not applied. Be aware that the sand in this grout will scratch polished marble.

Unsanded grout, like sandless grout, also absorbs water. Likewise it should be sealed, but it is suitable for use on polished tiles.

Combinations of grout and other materials, such as latex or epoxy, are available. These are the best for use in moist areas as they absorb less water. When using any kind of grout, adding a sealant is highly recommended.
